Vegan Gyoza Yu is a fully vegan gyoza restaurant in a quiet residential backstreet of Taito, about five minutes on foot from Uguisudani Station and a short walk from Ueno Park. It opened in 2021 and has since become one of the top rated restaurants in Tokyo on HappyCow. The entire concept is built around handmade gyoza in 11 different flavors, each a different color derived from natural ingredients rather than food coloring. Fillings include shiitake soy, garlic miso, ginger miso, kimchi, chives, green pepper, coriander, eggplant miso, and green onion, among others. There's no other food on the menu; gyoza is the only offering. The dumplings can be ordered pan fried or steamed. The space is small and modern, with about 10 to 15 seats inside plus terrace seating outside, wooden accents, plants, and an organic feel. The owner is a long time vegan and runs the operation personally.

Good to Know:

  • The 11 piece sampler set (¥1,900) is the way to try everything. It comes with a color coded legend identifying each filling. Individual gyoza are priced around ¥100 to ¥150 each, with a minimum order of 5 pieces.
  • No dipping sauce is served. The gyoza are seasoned to stand on their own, with each flavor distinct enough that sauce would mask the differences.
  • No rice is offered. The restaurant's position is that the gyoza are filling enough without it. Most reviewers agree.
  • The drink menu is a strong secondary feature. Lattes (almond, oat, or soy milk) with matcha, caramel, or chocolate options. Craft beer, cream sodas, and caffeine free choices for evening visits.
  • Frozen gyoza are available to take home or order online for nationwide shipping.
  • The pieces are larger than typical Japanese gyoza. Leftovers can be wrapped for takeout.
  • Order and pay at the counter. Cash and card accepted. English menu available. Staff speak English.
  • One of the few independent vegan restaurants in Tokyo that stays open later into the evening. Open Wednesday through Sunday, roughly 11:00 to 21:00. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
  • Five minute walk from JR Uguisudani Station (Yamanote Line). About 15 minutes on foot from the Tokyo National Museum and Ueno Park area.
