Vegan Bistro Jangara
Vegan
Vegan Bistro Jangara is a fully vegan restaurant in central Harajuku, opened in 2021 by Kyushu Jangara, a small ramen chain that started in Akihabara and is now approaching its 40th year. The bistro sits on the second floor directly above the original (non vegan) Kyushu Jangara Harajuku branch. The menu is wide for a vegan spot: ramen, grilled burgers with four sauces on the side, soy meat teppanyaki plates, curry, quesadillas, gyoza, karaage, and desserts. The ramen draws on the chain's Kyushu roots, with vegan versions of their tonkotsu style bowls using thin, egg free noodles and a rich soy based broth. About 70% of the clientele is international visitors, and the restaurant is named after the Hirado Jangara Festival in Nagasaki.
Good to Know:
- The Kobonshan ramen (Kumamoto style, rich umami broth with grilled soy meat chashu) and the Karabon (spicy tonkotsu style) are the most talked about bowls. Ramen runs around ¥1,280 to ¥1,450.
- The grilled burger (¥1,350) comes with guacamole, salsa, tartar sauce, and a homemade cheese sauce on the side.
- Gluten free noodles are available for an extra charge, though they're prepared using shared utensils and water, so not suitable for celiac.
- Garlic free options are available.
- The restaurant is almost always busy, especially at lunch, dinner, and weekends. No reservations accepted. Waits of 20 to 60 minutes are common. They sometimes run out of items by late evening.
- The entrance is easy to miss. Look for a nondescript elevator next to a Family Mart near Takeshita Street. Second floor, behind a door with a green sign.
- Open daily 11:00 to 22:00 (last order 21:00). Short walk from Harajuku Station or Meiji Jingumae Station.
- If the bistro is full, the non vegan Kyushu Jangara downstairs also carries a vegan ramen option.
