Nezunoya
Nezunoya started as a natural foods store in the Nezu neighborhood of Bunkyo in 1977, and about a decade later expanded into a restaurant by converting the old storage room behind the shop. The entire menu is vegan, prepared following macrobiotic principles with organic, pesticide free, and seasonally sourced ingredients. The focus is on simple, handmade Japanese home cooking: brown rice, miso soup (no fish stock), croquettes, ganmodoki (tofu fritters), harumaki, happosai, and daily changing side dishes. Everything is made by hand. The restaurant is accessed by walking through the natural foods shop at the front, which itself is worth browsing for organic vegetables, seitan, soy meat, and pantry staples. The space is small, calm, and has the character of a longtime neighborhood institution rather than a trendy opening. It sits in the Yanesen area (Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi), a traditional, low rise part of Tokyo known for temple walks, small shops, and old Edo atmosphere.
Good to Know:
- The Nezunoya Teishoku (set meal) is the signature: genmai (brown rice), miso soup, a main dish, seasonal side dishes, fruit, and tea. The menu changes daily and is posted on their website at 11:00am each morning.
- A daily vegetable curry option is also available, served with salad, pickles, and brown rice.
- Onigiri sets and cake sets round out the menu. The cakes change seasonally (green tea and walnut has appeared).
- Prices are reasonable for central Tokyo. Expect to spend around ¥800 to ¥1,200 per person for lunch.
- The restaurant is lunch only. Restaurant hours: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday 11:30 to 15:00. Cafe hours extend to 17:00 (last order 16:00) on those days. Closed Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
- The adjoining natural foods shop keeps slightly different hours and is open more days. Worth stopping in after your meal for organic produce and vegan pantry items.
- About 23 seats. Small and cozy, housed in a former brewery space. English menu available.
- One minute walk from Nezu Station (Chiyoda Line). Also walkable from Ueno. The Yanesen area around the restaurant is a popular neighborhood for slow, low key sightseeing, with Nezu Shrine nearby.
