Izakaya Masaka is a fully vegan izakaya on the basement floor of Shibuya Parco, in the Chaos Kitchen food hall. The format follows a classic izakaya setup: small shareable dishes designed to go with drinks. Everything on the menu is plant based. The focus is on soy meat karaage coated in tapioca flour for extra crunch, available in multiple sauce variations. The rest of the menu rounds out with gyoza, mapo tofu, and other bar food staples, all reworked without animal products. It reads more like a casual drinking spot than a health food restaurant, which is part of what makes it unusual in Tokyo's vegan scene.

Good to Know:

  • The karaage comes in five flavors: grated radish, Chinese black vinegar, Sichuan spicy, sweet and sour, and teriyaki mayo. The sesame version also gets a lot of attention.
  • The teishoku (set meal) with karaage or gyoza, rice, soup, and pickled mustard greens runs around ¥1,300 and is a solid lunch option.
  • The space is small, about 20 seats. Waits of 30 minutes to an hour are common during peak times, especially evenings and weekends. They sometimes sell out for the night by early evening.
  • Ordering is done via QR code on your phone with English available. Staff speak English.
  • Allium free options are available for those avoiding onion and garlic.
  • Located on the B1 floor of Shibuya Parco, a short walk from Shibuya Station. The basement food hall can be a bit disorienting to navigate but signage is there.
  • Open 12:00 to 22:00. Best time to avoid a wait is right at opening or mid afternoon after the lunch rush clears.
