Marugoto Vegan Dining Asakusa
Marugoto Vegan Dining Asakusa (formerly The Farm Cafe) is a small, fully vegan cafe on the banks of the Sumida River, a short walk from Senso ji Temple. It opened in October 2018 and is one of the few dedicated vegan options in the Asakusa sightseeing area. The entire menu is plant based, gluten free, additive free, refined sugar free, alcohol free in cooking, and free of the five pungent vegetables, making it compatible with a wide range of dietary needs. The owner and all staff are vegan, which shapes the service: warm, knowledgeable, and comfortable discussing ingredients. The food leans toward Japanese home cooking with dishes like curry rice, vegetable tempura, fried tempeh, salad plates, and brown rice sets. The space is small (about 10 seats inside) with a terrace that offers a view of Tokyo Skytree. The clientele skews heavily international, roughly 90% overseas visitors.
Good to Know:
- The lunch plate is the most versatile order, combining curry, tempura, and salad on one tray. The curry rice with tempeh and the tempura curry rice are also popular standalone options.
- Breakfast is available on weekends (from around 9:00 or 10:00), with waffles, curry, and bread. This is one of the few vegan breakfast options in the Asakusa area.
- Desserts include sweet potato donuts and vegan ice cream. Drinks include coffee, hibiscus tea, mulberry matcha tea, and beer.
- Portions are on the smaller side for the price, which is a recurring note in reviews. The food quality and care are consistently praised, but those with larger appetites may want to add a side dish.
- Ordering is via QR code. English is available on the menu and from staff. Free wifi.
- The space is small and there may be a wait during peak hours. A one hour time limit may be in effect when busy. Solo diners may be seated at a smaller table.
- Reservations can be made through the official website by form, with email confirmation to follow.
- Hours change month to month. Generally Tuesday through Friday 11:30 to 15:00 (last order 14:00), weekends and holidays from around 10:00 to 15:00 (last order 14:00). Closed Mondays (if a public holiday falls on Monday, open that day, closed Tuesday instead). Check the website or Instagram for the current schedule.
- One minute walk from Asakusa Station Exit 5 (Ginza Line) or Tobu Asakusa Station north exit. Four minutes from Toei Asakusa Line Exit A3. Ten minute walk to Tokyo Skytree.
