KOMEDA is □ is the first and only fully plant based location from Komeda Coffee, a major Japanese kissaten (retro cafe) chain with over 1,000 shops nationwide. It opened in July 2020 on the ground floor of Ginza Shochiku Square in Higashi Ginza. The name is a play on words: "kome" (rice) and "daizu" (soybeans) combine to sound like "Komeda." The entire menu is vegan certified, and the format mirrors the familiar Komeda experience: thick toast, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, and the chain's signature Shiro Noir dessert, all reworked without animal products. The interior swaps Komeda's usual orange branding for green, with recycled wood, hanging plants, and the same cozy booth seating the chain is known for. It also serves alcohol (vegan beer, wine, fruit liquor), making it one of the few Komeda locations to do so.
Good to Know:
- The Shiro Noir is the signature: a warm Danish pastry topped with almond milk soft serve. The vegan version is a faithful recreation of the Komeda classic. Around ¥880.
- Burgers include avocado teriyaki, miso cheese, curry mayo, and wasabi options. The grilled soy meat burger is a frequent recommendation. Burgers run around ¥1,280 and come with chips.
- The katsu sandwich (vegan cutlet with tangy sauce between thick white bread) is a solid kissaten staple. Other sandwiches include ham and egg (plant based), potato salad, and seasonal options like strawberry during spring.
- Morning drink orders come with a complimentary slice of thick toast with spread. The soy cream cheese option is popular.
- Ordering is via tablet at the table. English is available in the settings. Staff speak some English.
- Open 7:00 to 23:00 (last order 22:30) daily, which is notably long for a vegan restaurant in Tokyo. Useful for early breakfast or a late evening meal.
- Located on the 1F of Ginza Shochiku Square, near Higashi Ginza Station. No reservations accepted.
- Loyalty stamp card system: one stamp per ¥500 spent.
