Komaki Shokudo Kamakura Fushikian is a fully vegan restaurant serving shojin ryori, the traditional Buddhist cuisine of Japanese temples, in a relaxed cafeteria style setting. It's been open since 2013, tucked inside CHABARA, a specialty food marketplace underneath the train tracks near Akihabara Station. The chef trained in the Rinzai school at Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura, and the kitchen follows strict Buddhist dietary principles: no animal products, no white sugar, and no five pungent roots (garlic, leeks, onion, chives, scallion). This also makes it suitable for oriental vegans and those following a Jain diet (though mushrooms are used). Meals are served teishoku style, with a main dish, seasonal side dishes, rice, miso soup, and pickles.

Good to Know:

  • The Kuchifuku set meal is the most popular item: nine seasonal side dishes alongside rice and miso soup. Other mains include soy meat karaage with tartar sauce, shojin curry, shojin omurice (made without eggs), fu katsu (fried wheat gluten cutlet), and tofu skin udon. Sets start around ¥1,100 and most fall in the ¥1,000 to ¥2,000 range.
  • Weekday pricing is lower than weekends. Several reviewers note the weekend surcharge of around ¥500.
  • Desserts include a matcha parfait (¥1,540) and grillable dango, but during lunch these need to be booked in advance. Dessert is available without prebooking at dinner.
  • Rice can be upgraded to azuki brown rice. Free refills on rice and miso soup with any set meal.
  • The space is small, roughly four to five tables for two and one larger table. Quiet atmosphere with no music. Waits are possible at peak times. Reservations are accepted and required for groups of four or more.
  • Two minute walk from JR Akihabara Station (Electric Town exit). The restaurant is inside CHABARA, which is also worth browsing for regional artisanal food products from around Japan.
  • English menu available. Takeout offered.
  • Open 11:00 to 20:00 (last order 19:30).
